Flow Assurance Customized in the Lab for Oil and Gas Production

By Robert Callais

When faced with build-up, blockages and other flow assurance issues in production, finding the solution can be confusing. Ideal Energy Solutions takes a comprehensive view of your production issues and fully assesses all details to find the most effective solution for your unique issue.

At Ideal, we take every measure to ensure our solution is the right one for you. Testing samples extensively ensures compatibility and an increase in the flow of your well or pipeline. We know your operation needs to be back online and fully functional quickly, and our response and attention to detail make sure of it. Learn more about the steps we take to increase flow assurance in your operations.

Step one: Start with a site visit

We start by visiting the job site to verify the preliminary information we receive from our questionnaire online. Once there, we gather information on the history of the well, age, length, past problems, etc. We also like to see the layout of the site and assess the equipment hookups, flow lines, etc. In order to add our products, we need to know what equipment we will be working with and if we need to make any adjustments for the job.

Asking for more specifics about production issues, formation issues and the quality of the crude helps us start formulating possible solutions. Most importantly, we obtain samples of the crude for lab testing. These samples are crucial for determining the causes of pipeline issues and establishing compatibility with Ideal’s products.

Step two: Lab testing to determine solutions

In the lab, our chemists begin analyzing and testing the samples. We begin testing with a minimum of 600ml sample of the crude in question and begin with a visual analysis. Samples vary in color and consistency, but even when clear at room temperature, the sample may contain paraffins and asphaltenes that cause deposits and blockages. This is why we do more tests in the lab.

Measurements are taken to determine the viscosity, pour point and cloud point temperatures. This information helps us understand the properties of the crude and how to increase its flow through production equipment and pipelines or remediate blockages. At this point, we also determine the compatibility of the crude with Ideal’s products to ensure that previous attempts to mitigate the problem with other chemicals have not altered the oil’s ability to mix with our products.

Once specific measurements of the crude are calculated and compatibility is confirmed, we estimate the amounts of product needed to solve the issue. We add different amounts and concentrations to the samples of crude and take new measurements to determine how our products affect the oil and allow us to determine how best to remediate your problem. Our flow assurance product application is custom-formulated and specific to the crude produced or pumped through your system.

Our products and issues they address:

  • WellRenew® - a wellbore remediation solution that removes paraffin wax and asphaltene blockages in downhole tubulars. It stimulates formations to eliminate skin damage and enhance production.
  • PipeRenew® - a remediation solution that removes paraffin wax and asphaltene blockages in any flowline or pipeline.
  • PigRenew™ - a non-stickable pigging solution for remediating paraffin wax and asphaltene blockages in pipelines.
  • LamFlo® - a preventative treatment inhibitor solution that breaks apart and suspends paraffin wax and asphaltenes.
  • LamKleen® - a specially formulated detergent solution that penetrates organic deposits and removes hydrocarbon residuals.

Step three: The proposal and procedure for remediation

We use the information in the questionnaire and the data collected in the lab to write a proposal addressing how to treat the problem and the amount of product needed. Next, we submit a detailed procedure for steps moving forward in the process. Here we include safety issues and address any hazards noticed during the site visit. We also note any limitations due to the location of the jobsite and explain how we will treat the well, pipeline, or flow line. Any equipment we may need to bring in or equipment we need access to will be listed in the procedure as well.

Step four: Delivery of product to the jobsite

All products are transported to the site in five-gallon pails. Some products are premixed and ready to use. Others are blended on location. All products are noncombustible and Green Seal® certified, making storage of our chemicals very easy because they can be stored in a standard storage or containment area. No special accommodation is needed. Any accidental spills are not a problem because all of our products are environmentally friendly.
